Explanation

George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950) was an Irish playwright, born in Dublin; he moved to London in 1876 and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925. In his play “Pygmalion” (1913) Professor Henry Higgins, an expert in phonetics, teaches a flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to speak clearly and politely; Colonel Pickering pays for the lessons. Eliza succeeds, but she is hurt because Higgins does not treat her with respect. Reporting commands: direct “Open your books,” → told us to open our books. A strong command uses ordered; a polite request (“I’d like you to ...”) uses asked. Negative: “Don’t talk!” → told us not to talk. Pronouns and time words change: your → my/his/her/their, now → immediately / at once. Stage directions show how to speak: [softly], [loudly], [to Eliza].

Worked examples

Direct: The director said sharply, “Stand on the stage now!” Indirect: The director ordered the actors to stand on the stage immediately. Direct: Madina said, “Please help me, Jasur.” Indirect: Madina asked Jasur to help her.
Stage directions: DIRECTOR [loudly]: Repeat the line! — The director told the actor to repeat the line, and he spoke loudly. ASSISTANT [kindly]: Please try again. — The assistant kindly asked him to try again.
