Mark Twain: an extract from «Приключения Гекльберри Финна»
Mark Twain (1835–1910) was an American writer; his real name was Samuel Clemens, and «Марк Твен» is his literary pen name. He was born into a judge’s family, loved to invent stories as a child, and his school compositions were considered the best and earned him prizes. His father died when he was 12, he had to earn money early, and he kept writing. «Приключения Тома Сойера» and «Приключения Гекльберри Финна» brought him world fame. Hemingway said all American literature came out of the one book «Гекльберри Финн». In the extract, swindlers sell the enslaved Jim to farmer Silas Phelps. Huck wants to save his friend, while Tom, posing as Sid, treats it as an adventure game. They find the shed where Jim is kept, Tom confuses the man who brings Jim his food, and at night the two dig a tunnel under the shed and get in to Jim.
“Whose plan is better?”: two groups defend Huck’s and Tom’s plans and give arguments in Russian: «По-моему, … лучше, потому что …».
