Explanation

Negative adverbs are also formed with the prefixes «ни-» and «не-»: «никак, нигде, никуда, ниоткуда, никогда» and «негде, некуда, неоткуда, незачем, некогда». They are written as one word. A sentence with a «ни-» adverb also has «не» (double negation): «Я никогда не был там. Здесь нигде нет воды». The «не-» adverbs mean “there is no place, time or reason to ...”; the verb is an infinitive and the person is in the dative: «Мне некуда идти. Ему некогда». In «не-» adverbs the stress is on «не»: «не′где, не′куда, не′когда»; in «ни-» adverbs on the last syllable: «нигде′, никуда′, никогда′». «Не′когда» has two meanings: 1) no time («Мне не′когда»); 2) once, long ago («Не′когда здесь жили мамонты»).

Worked examples
“Каникулы” (Holidays). «— Куда ты едешь летом? — Никуда, мне некогда: я помогаю в саду. — А где твоя тетрадь? — Нигде не вижу, искать негде: все полки пусты.» (“Where are you going in summer?” “Nowhere, I have no time: I help in the garden.” “And where is your notebook?” “I can’t see it anywhere, and there is nowhere to look: all the shelves are empty.”)
Table: «где? — нигде′ / не′где»; «куда? — никуда′ / не′куда»; «откуда? — ниотку′да / не′откуда»; «зачем? — низаче′м / не′зачем»; «когда? — никогда′ / не′когда»; «как? — ника′к».
Class activity

“Never — always”. The teacher asks («Ты когда-нибудь был в цирке?»). Pupils answer playfully with «Никогда не был»; the teacher checks the double negation.

Practice

2
Fill in: «Мне ... идти», «Мы ... не были», «... ждать писем».
3
Pronoun or adverb: «никто, нигде, нечего, некогда, никуда, ничем».
4
Why are there two negatives in «Я нигде не был»?
