State of a thing: short adjectives

Textbook: pp. 11–14
GoalForm short adjectives and use them in sentences; know the fleeting vowel and spelling after hushing consonants.
New words
сильный · kuchliумный · aqlliосторожный · ehtiyotkorблизкий · yengil
Explanation

A full adjective answers «какой? какая? какое? какие?». A short adjective answers «каков? какова? каково? каковы?» and describes a state. It changes only by gender and number: masculine has no ending («силён»), feminine «-а» («сильна»), neuter «-о» («сильно»), plural «-ы/-и» («сильны»). A short adjective is usually the predicate and stands after the noun: «Наш конь силён». If the stem ends in «н» or «к», the masculine form gets a fleeting vowel: «сильный — силён, близкий — близок, ловкий — ловок». No soft sign is written after «ж, ч, ш»: «колючий — колюч, свежий — свеж».

Worked examples
“На реке” (At the river). «Река широка и глубока. Вода холодна, но чиста. Берег высок и крут. Мы осторожны и внимательны.» (The river is wide and deep. The water is cold but clean. The bank is high and steep. We are careful and attentive.)
Table: «умный — умён, умна, умно, умны»; «близкий — близок, близка, близко, близки»; «свежий — свеж, свежа, свежо, свежи».
Class activity

“What is it like?” The teacher gives a full adjective («смелый волк»); pupils make a sentence with the short form («Волк смел»).
