Explanation

The perfective gerund answers «что сделав?» and expresses an additional action completed before the main one: «Пообедав, дети пошли в парк». It is formed from the infinitive stem: «-в» after a vowel stem («нарисовать — нарисовав, купить — купив, сказать — сказав»); «-ши» when the past stem ends in a consonant («запереть — запер — заперши»; this form is rare). For «-ся» verbs it is «-вшись»: «вернуться — вернувшись, умыться — умывшись». One person does both actions, and the gerund phrase is set off by commas. Compare the imperfective: «Читая книгу, он улыбался» (at the same time) and «Прочитав книгу, он вернул её» (first read, then returned).

Worked examples
“В походе” (On a hike). «Дойдя до реки, туристы остановились. Поставив палатку, они немного отдохнули. Набрав в бутылки чистой воды, они пошли дальше.» (Having reached the river, the hikers stopped. Having put up the tent, they rested a little. Having filled their bottles with clean water, they went on.)
Table: «купить — купив»; «прочитать — прочитав»; «встретиться — встретившись»; «сесть — сев».
Class activity

“What first?” The teacher names two actions («открыть дверь, войти»). Pupils begin the sentence with a gerund: «Открыв дверь, я вошёл».
