Explanation

A cardinal numeral answers «сколько?». The soft sign is written at the end of 5–20 and 30 («пять, двенадцать, двадцать, тридцать») and in the middle of 50–80 and 500–900 («пятьдесят, восемьсот, шестьсот»). «Сорок, девяносто, сто» have two forms: «сорок, девяносто, сто» in the nominative and accusative and «сорока, девяноста, ста» in all other cases. In 50–80 and 500–900 both parts decline: «пятидесяти, пятьюдесятью, семисот, семьюстами». In compound numerals every word declines: «двухсот девяносто шести метров». «Тысяча» is a feminine noun («одна тысяча, две тысячи, пять тысяч») and «миллион» a masculine one («два миллиона, пять миллионов»).

Worked examples
“В школе” (At school). «В нашей школе учатся шестьсот сорок учеников. В ста метрах от школы находится библиотека. Библиотекарь знает о каждой из пятидесяти книг на новой полке.» (640 pupils study at our school. A library stands a hundred metres from the school. The librarian knows about each of the fifty books on the new shelf.)
Declension: Nom. «пятьдесят, семьсот»; Gen. «пятидесяти, семисот»; Dat. «пятидесяти, семистам»; Instr. «пятьюдесятью, семьюстами»; Prep. «о пятидесяти, о семистах».
Class activity

“How many?” The teacher calls a number; pupils write it in words, then say it with «до», «от», «около» («до пятидесяти»).
