Main and additional action at the same time: imperfective gerund
A gerund (деепричастие) is an unchangeable verb form that expresses an additional action and answers «что делая?» (imperfective) or «что сделав?» (perfective). The imperfective gerund shows that the additional action happens at the same time as the main one: «Бабушка вязала шарф, поглядывая в окно». It is formed from the present-tense stem with «-я» or, after «ж, ч, ш, щ», «-а»: «читают — читая, слушают — слушая, говорят — говоря, держат — держа»; with «-ся» verbs: «-ясь, -ась»: «улыбаясь». It is not formed from some verbs: stems in «г, к» («пекут, стригут»), stems in a hushing consonant («пашут, лижут»), stems of consonants only («пьют, льют, рвут») and verbs with «-ну-» («сохнут, гаснут»). One person does both the main and the additional action. A gerund phrase is always set off by commas; a gerund inside a set phrase is not: «работать не покладая рук».
“Two things at once”. A pupil performs one action and says another: «Я иду, напевая». The class scores a point if the gerund phrase is correct.
