Explanation
Indefinite pronouns name an unknown person, thing or quality. They are formed from the question words «кто, что, какой, чей, сколько» with the suffixes «-то, -нибудь, -либо» or the prefix «кое-»: «кто-то, что-нибудь, кто-либо, кое-кто». There are also separate ones: «некто, нечто, некоторый, несколько». «-то», «-нибудь», «-либо» and «кое-» are joined with a hyphen. «-то» shows that something exists but is unknown: «Кто-то постучал». «-нибудь, -либо» mean any, no matter which, and are common in questions, commands and the future: «Принеси что-нибудь почитать». With «кое-» the speaker knows but does not say: «Я кое-что знаю». In declension the preposition stays outside: «кто-то — кого-то — кому-то — кем-то — о ком-то»; «некто» exists only in the nominative, «нечто» in the nominative and accusative.
Worked examples
“Звонок” (The doorbell). «Вчера вечером кто-то позвонил в дверь, но на площадке было пусто. На коврике лежало что-то в белой бумаге. Мама сказала: “Спроси у кого-нибудь из соседей, чей это пакет”. Я спросил и узнал кое-что интересное: это подарок от бабушки.» (Last night someone rang the bell, but the landing was empty. Something in white paper lay on the mat. Mum said: “Ask one of the neighbours whose parcel it is.” I asked and learned something interesting: it was a present from Grandma.)
“Mystery box”. A classmate hides something in a box. You ask «Там что-нибудь мягкое?»; the answer is «Да, там что-то мягкое». Keep asking until you guess.
