Sports at school

Textbook: p. 23
GoalSports vocabulary; the play / do / go rule; describing a PE lesson at school.
New words
swimming · suzishrunning · yugurishskating · konkida uchishsports ground · sport maydonchasi
Explanation

Three different verbs go with sports. We use play for team and ball games: play football, play volleyball, play tennis. We use do for individual sports and exercises: do gymnastics, do judo, do athletics. We use go for activities that end in -ing: go swimming, go skiing, go running, go skating. To ask about a PE lesson: “How many PE lessons do you have a week?”, “Where do you have them?”, “What do you do at PE lessons?” Answer: “We have two PE lessons a week. We have them in the gym. We play volleyball and run races.” Likes: “I like skiing but I don’t like boxing.”

Worked examples
In our school we have three PE lessons a week. Each lesson is forty-five minutes long. In autumn we do athletics on the school ground, and in winter we play basketball in the gym.
— What do you do on Tuesdays? — We go swimming. — Do you play any team games? — Yes, we play volleyball and football.
