Textbook: p. 81
GoalAustralian animals and facts; the structure “Do you know that ...?”; fun places in a park.
New words
kangaroo · kengurukoala · koalaemu · emucannot fly · ucha olmaydigan
Explanation

Australia is both a continent and a country. Many of its animals live almost nowhere else: kangaroos, koalas, wombats and emus. Facts: kangaroos hop, and their top speed is about 60–70 km an hour. Koalas eat eucalyptus leaves. The wombat is a marsupial (not a bear) and carries its baby in a pouch. The emu cannot fly; only the ostrich is a bigger bird, and an emu runs at up to about 50 km an hour. In the north there are saltwater crocodiles; they are dangerous, so people must keep away from them. To share an interesting fact: “Do you know that kangaroos can jump more than three metres?” “Did you know that emus cannot fly?” On the Gold Coast in Queensland there is a theme park called Dreamworld, known for roller-coasters and animal encounters.

Worked examples
Do you know that a koala sleeps about twenty hours a day? It lives in eucalyptus trees and eats leaves. In Dreamworld visitors can watch kangaroos, but they must not feed them without a keeper’s permission.
— Would you like to visit Australia? — Yes, I would. I’d like to see a real koala. — Have you ever seen a kangaroo? — Only on TV.
