Explanation

The ancient Games were held at Olympia in Greece from 776 BC (the traditional date), once every four years. A peace agreement let people travel there safely. For a long time the only contest was a sprint of about 190 metres, and only men could compete. Later the Games stopped. In 1894 Pierre de Coubertin of France founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the first modern Games were held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. Women started to take part in 1900. Places for sport: swimming – pool, tennis – court, basketball – court, football – pitch, boxing – ring, running – track, gymnastics – gym, ice hockey – rink. For actions happening now we use the Present Continuous: “She is swimming in the pool now.” (am/is/are + -ing).
