Explanation
Zavqiy’s real name was Ubaydulloh; he was born in Qo‘qon in 1853 in a family of boot-makers. In 1870–1874 he studied at madrasas and took part in literary gatherings with poets such as Muqimiy and Furqat. He earned his living by his father’s craft, shoemaking. In 1890 he set out on a hajj with his uncle and spent six months in Turkey and the Arabian lands. Zavqiy died in 1921 aged 68; he did not put his poems into a book during his life, and his surviving works were published in 1958 and 1960, and in an expanded form in 2003.
