Explanation
A cold chisel is a wedge-shaped metalworking tool for cutting metal. It is used to cut blanks from sheet, make holes and grooves and clean rough spots. The edge is 5 to 25 mm wide; the head is conical and domed, which helps it withstand hammer blows. A narrow chisel is a thin chisel for hard materials. A screwdriver turns screws in or out. Pliers separate parts joined with nails, pull wrongly driven nails and cut or bend wire. When chiselling, protective goggles are worn and work is done only under the teacher’s supervision.
Worked examples
When turning a screw, the screwdriver tip must fit the screw slot, otherwise the slot is damaged.
A bent nail is pulled out with pliers; the teacher is present and hands stay away from the jaws.
Class activity
Choose the tool: cards carry jobs (“turn a screw”, “cut wire”, “pull a nail”, “cut sheet”). A pair matches each job to the right tool (chisel, screwdriver, pliers). Played with cards; no real tool is in hand.
