The Aral

Textbook: Part 4, pp. 68–70
GoalCompare a legend and information about the Aral problem; feel ecological responsibility.
New words
Moynaq (town) · Moynoqshore · qirg‘oqecological · ekologikresponsibility · mas’uliyat
Explanation

There are also folk legends about the Aral Sea. The textbook gives a legend called “Orol”. We do not repeat it; we read our own text. A legend tells an event in the language of the people, while an informative text gives exact facts. The drying of the Aral Sea is a big ecological problem that has affected the life of the people of Karakalpakstan. In the town of Moynaq old ships left in the sand have become a memorial to this change.

Worked examples
“Ships in the sand”. We went to Moynaq. Near the town, rusty old ships stood in the middle of the sand. Once they sailed on the Aral Sea and fishermen worked on them. The guide told us: “With the sea gone, life changed too.” I promised myself: I will not waste water and will teach others too. After the trip I started reading books about the Aral.
Legend and information: a legend – an event; information – facts and figures.
