“Qisasi Rabg‘uziy” (excerpts)
The textbook gives three excerpts from the work, and its analysis section also cites a tale about Luqman. In the “Tale of the grape” the work says that Satan stole the grape seed and demanded to water it three times, that drink came into being from this, and that its effect on a person is compared with the traits of the fox, lion and pig. “The snake and the swallow” tells how a mouse gnawed a hole in the ark, the snake blocked the hole and asked for the sweetest meat as its reward; the bee finds that human flesh is the sweetest, but the swallow tears out the bee’s tongue and says that frog meat is the sweetest. Since then the snake eats frogs and has become the swallow’s enemy, while the swallow lives under one roof with people. In “Solomon’s conversation with the ant” the wise ant, ruler of the ants, reminds Solomon that possessions pass away and says that she herself goes round at night looking for the sick; Solomon is humbled and repents. In “Luqman and his master” Luqman names the tongue and the heart as both the best and the worst things.
