Explanation
Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904) was born in the Russian city of Taganrog; after graduating from the medical faculty of Moscow University in 1884 he worked as a doctor in villages near Moscow and later moved to Yalta because of illness. According to the textbook, he studied people’s life closely, listened to their troubles and depicted some flaws of human nature in a humorous way. The larger part of his legacy consists of dozens of stories, in which the art of showing large events in few words is evident. He also has novellas and travel notes, and plays such as “The Seagull,” “Uncle Vanya,” “Three Sisters” and “The Cherry Orchard” have been staged in theatres. His works have been rendered into Uzbek by many translators.
Worked examples
Example: because his medical work let Chekhov see many kinds of people closely, ordinary people’s lives come out truthfully in his stories.
Example: showing the character of a whole life through the depiction of one moment in a one-page story illustrates the principle “big events in few words.”
