Textbook: Part 1, pp. 149–151
GoalGroup the “Saddi Iskandariy” wise sayings by theme and link their meaning with one’s own life.
New words
high resolve, moral fortitude · himmatpatriotism · vatanparvarlikcouplet of wisdom · hikmatli baytlife far from home, exile · g‘urbat
Explanation
The textbook gives several dozen wise couplets from the epic, and they can be grouped by theme. The couplets on homeland and people say that a person should strive as far as possible for family and country, should not leave the homeland even for a moment and should avoid the hardship of exile. The passages on himmat say that a person’s worth is measured not by money but by loftiness of spirit. There are sayings on truthfulness, on the word of a liar having no standing in company, on not sharing the views of bad people and on how one who wrongs others harms himself more. Other couplets stress that people are equal in creation but differ in knowledge and nature, that travel and study bring a person to maturity, and that a land prospers under a just ruler.
Worked examples
Example: By the sense of the couplet that a person with high resolve is not poor, a student without money but with lofty aims can be considered rich.
Example: The saying that one who wrongs others harms himself more is confirmed by a person who loses his reputation by offending others.
Class activity
Group work: place the sayings into a table under four themes (homeland, himmat, truthfulness, travel) and add your own example for each.
Practice
1
What do the sayings say about the homeland?
One should not abandon the homeland, should strive for people and family and avoid the hardship of exile.
2
Define the concept of himmat in your own words.
Himmat is a person’s high aim, resolve and loftiness of spirit, which determine his worth rather than wealth.
3
Explain the idea “one who wrongs others harms himself more” with a present-day example.
For example, a person who slanders others eventually loses trust and damages his own reputation.
4
Why is the saying about travel linked with knowledge and experience?
Because on a journey a person sees new lands and people, broadens his outlook and gains experience.
