Erkin Vohidov
Textbook: Part 2, p. 63
GoalUnderstand the assessments given to Erkin Vohidov’s work by literary scholars and define his place.
Erkin Vohidov (1936–2017) was one of the major representatives of Uzbek poetry, and the textbook introduces his work through three views. Abdulla Oripov writes that in his poetry the scenes and tones of the people’s hard, sorrowful and proud roads are reflected through the key of a precise time and place. The literary scholar Umarali Normatov notes his charming lyric songs together with epics that expressed the sorrow of the age, and also his satire, kneaded with delicate wit, irony and sarcasm. Abdug‘afur Rasulov calls him an artist who penetrated deeply into the people’s heart. So Vohidov’s work covers several directions: lyrics, the epic and satire.
Worked examples
Example: The epic “Ruhlar isyoni” is an example of works raised to the level of “the sorrow of the age”: it reflects the pain of an era.
Example: Satire is another facet of the poet’s work: with delicate laughter and irony it shows serious problems.
Class activity
Table of views: write the three scholars’ assessments in the columns “what it stresses – which genre it concerns.”
