Explanation

In the first couplet the beloved’s face is likened to a tulip amid greenery and her eye to a gazelle within a tulip; the poet has in mind that the green shoot growing inside a real tulip resembles the head of a deer. In the second couplet the beloved is pictured as the Moon and the other fairy-like beauties as the halo around it. Internal rhymes and many open syllables give the couplets a pleasing music, which the textbook links with the exuberance of the lover’s heart. In the following couplets the beloved is beautiful but also skilled at cruelty, while the lover spends sleepless nights in separation. In the maqta‘ the words “yosh” and “safha” are used with two meanings, and the poet says he is ready to write a hundred treatises about the beloved.

Worked examples
Example: The Moon and its halo are the beloved and her friends: the beloved in the centre, others around her shows the exact logic of the comparison.
Example: The words “ey jon, hayron, namoyon” form three internal rhymes in the couplet and strengthen its musical ring.
Class activity

Picture-poem: draw the image of the tulip and gazelle from the ghazal and write the logic of the comparison under it in two sentences.
