Explanation

Each case form has several meanings. The nominative marks the subject: «Весна пришла». The genitive expresses absence («нет билета»), possession («ручка друга»), quantity («килограмм яблок»), cause («из-за дождя») and purpose («для школы»). The dative expresses direction toward a person («дать другу») or a state («мне холодно»). The accusative has the meaning of a direct object («читаю книгу»), direction («в город») and duration («на неделю»). The instrumental expresses the instrument («писать ручкой»), place («над столом»), time («утром») and the doer in a passive sentence («написано автором»). The prepositional is used only with a preposition and expresses place («в Самарканде»), topic («о книге») and time («в июне»).

Worked examples
«Вода из реки» (starting point, genitive), «книга для брата» (purpose, genitive), «жить без заботы» (absence, genitive).
«Мы говорили о поездке» – topic (prepositional). «Он вернулся ночью» – time (instrumental).
