§ 5. Phraseological units (idioms)
Textbook: pp. 14–15
GoalUnderstand phraseological units, use them correctly in speech, and find synonymous and antonymous ones.
New words
фразеологизм (idiom) · фразеологизм (ibora)устойчивое сочетание (set phrase) · устойчивое сочетание (turg‘un birikma)образное значение (figurative meaning) · образное значение (obrazli ma’no)пословица (proverb) · пословица (maqol)
Explanation
A phraseological unit is a stable combination of words with one whole meaning: «водить за нос» (“to deceive”). Its meaning is not the sum of the meanings of its words, so it cannot be translated word for word. Its composition cannot be changed: we say «ни свет ни заря», not «ни день ни заря». Phraseological units also have synonyms («чуть свет – ни свет ни заря») and antonyms («работать не покладая рук» – to work hard, as against «сидеть сложа руки» – to sit idle). They make speech vivid and expressive, but they should not be overused. Look up an unknown unit in a phraseological dictionary.
Worked examples
«Положа руку на сердце» means “honestly”. «Положа руку на сердце, я не знаю ответа».
«Первый блин комом» means that a first attempt is often unsuccessful. «Не огорчайся, первый блин комом!»
Class activity
“Find the idiom”. One student gives the meaning (“very early”) and the team names the unit («ни свет ни заря»).
Practice
1
Give the meaning of «вставлять палки в колёса».
мешать
2
Replace with a unit: «Он оказал нам такую помощь, что лучше бы не помогал».
Он оказал нам медвежью услугу.
3
Make a sentence with «после дождичка в четверг».
Он обещал вернуть книгу после дождичка в четверг.
4
Why can a phraseological unit not be translated word for word?
Its meaning belongs to the whole phrase, not to separate words; word-for-word translation loses the meaning.
