Explanation

A preposition expresses the dependence of a noun, numeral or pronoun on another word; it does not change and is not a member of the sentence. It makes clear relations of place («в библиотеке»), time («после обеда»), cause («из-за тумана») and purpose («для выставки»). Non-derived prepositions («в, на, с, из, от») were not formed from other parts of speech. Derived prepositions come from adverbs («вдоль, около, возле, мимо»), nouns («в течение, вследствие, в отличие от, по причине») and adverbial participles («благодаря, несмотря на, согласно, судя по»). Some require a particular case: «благодаря», «согласно», «вопреки» take the dative («благодаря поддержке», «согласно расписанию»), «в течение» takes the genitive («в течение недели»), «по окончании» takes the prepositional. Mistakes: not «по приезду» but «по приезде»; not «оплатить за проезд» but «оплатить проезд».
