§ 12. Meanings of the case forms of nouns
Textbook: pp. 30–32
ЦельTell the main meanings of noun case forms and prepositions apart and use them correctly in sentences.
Each case form has several meanings. The nominative marks the subject: «Весна пришла». The genitive expresses absence («нет билета»), possession («ручка друга»), quantity («килограмм яблок»), cause («из-за дождя») and purpose («для школы»). The dative expresses direction toward a person («дать другу») or a state («мне холодно»). The accusative has the meaning of a direct object («читаю книгу»), direction («в город») and duration («на неделю»). The instrumental expresses the instrument («писать ручкой»), place («над столом»), time («утром») and the doer in a passive sentence («написано автором»). The prepositional is used only with a preposition and expresses place («в Самарканде»), topic («о книге») and time («в июне»).
Примеры
«Вода из реки» (starting point, genitive), «книга для брата» (purpose, genitive), «жить без заботы» (absence, genitive).
«Мы говорили о поездке» – topic (prepositional). «Он вернулся ночью» – time (instrumental).
Работа в классе
“Case detective”. A sentence is read; the group identifies the case and the meaning of the highlighted word.
Упражнения

творительный падеж, орудие действия
3
Which case is «живу в Самарканде»?
предложный падеж (место)
4
Why is «читаю книгу» accusative but «думаю о книге» prepositional?
«Читать» is transitive: its object stands in the accusative without a preposition. «Думать» takes the preposition «о», and the case is prepositional.
