§ 21. The verb. Categories of the verb
Textbook: pp. 64–66
GoalIdentify the categories of the verb (aspect, transitivity, mood, tense, person, number, gender) and form conjugated forms.
A verb names an action or a state. Its initial form is the infinitive: «ходить», «беречь». Verbs are imperfective («что делать?») or perfective («что сделать?»). Transitive verbs govern a noun in the accusative without a preposition («читать книгу»); other verbs, and verbs with «-ся», are intransitive. There are three moods: indicative («пишу, буду писать»), imperative («пиши») and conditional («писал бы»). In the present and future a verb changes by person and number, in the past by gender and number. There are two conjugations: the first has the vowels «е/ё, у/ю» in its personal endings («рисуешь, рисуют»), the second «и, а/я» («строишь, строят»).
Worked examples
«Я рисую, ты рисуешь, он рисует; мы рисуем, вы рисуете, они рисуют» – first conjugation. «Я строю, ты строишь … они строят» – second conjugation.
