§ 19. The pronoun
Textbook: pp. 57–60
GoalDistinguish the groups of pronouns, decline personal pronouns, and spell indefinite and negative pronouns correctly.
A pronoun points to an object, a feature or a quantity without naming it. Pronouns fall into nine groups: personal («я, ты, он»), reflexive («себя»), possessive («мой, наш»), demonstrative («этот, тот»), interrogative («кто? что?»), relative («который»), indefinite («кто-то, кто-нибудь, кое-кто»), negative («никто, ничто») and defining («каждый, любой, сам»). Personal pronouns decline: «я – меня – мне – меня – мной – обо мне». After a preposition the third-person pronouns take «н»: «у него, к нему, с ним, о нём». Indefinite pronouns are formed with «-то, -либо, -нибудь, кое-» and written with a hyphen. Negative pronouns are formed with «ни-» (declined: «никто – никого») and «не-» («некого, нечего»); with a preposition they are written separately: «ни у кого», «не у кого».
Worked examples
«Кто-то позвонил» – someone, I do not know who; «Позвони кому-нибудь» – anyone at all; «Кое-кто знает ответ» – the speaker knows but does not say.
«Мне не у кого спросить» (there is nobody to ask) – «Я ни у кого не спросил» (I asked nobody).
