§ 22. Spelling of verbs
Textbook: pp. 67–70
GoalKnow verb spelling: «ь» in the infinitive, «-тся/-ться», personal endings, the imperative, exceptional verbs and special conjugation.
The infinitive always has a soft sign: «любить», «беречь». To choose between «-тся» and «-ться» ask the question: «что делает?» – «-тся» («он учится»), «что делать?» – «-ться» («он хочет учиться»). If a personal ending is unstressed, decide the conjugation from the infinitive: all verbs in «-ить» are second conjugation («ходишь»); exceptions: «брить, стелить» (first). The second conjugation also includes «гнать, держать, дышать, слышать» and «смотреть, видеть, ненавидеть, вертеть, терпеть, обидеть, зависеть». The second person singular ends in «-ешь/-ишь»: «читаешь, строишь». The imperative is formed with «й, и, ь»: «читай», «неси», «спрячь». «Хотеть» and «бежать» have mixed endings; «есть» and «дать» have a special conjugation: «ем, ешь, ест», «дам, дашь, даст».
Worked examples
«Что делает?» – «учится»; «Что делать?» – «учиться». «Ему нравится петь» («-тся»: что делает?), «Он начал учиться петь» («-ться»: что делать?).
«Стелить» is first conjugation: «мы стелем, вы стелете»; «слышать» is second: «слышишь, слышат».
Class activity
“-тся/-ться referee”. The teacher reads a sentence with a gap; students choose the ending and prove it with the question.
Practice

видеть – II, видят; держать – II, держат; стелить – I, стелют; дышать – II, дышат
3
Form the imperative: «встать» (you, sing.), «спрятать» (you, sing.), «вернуть» (you, pl.).

4
Why is «и» written in «ходишь»?
Because the infinitive «ходить» ends in «-ить», so it is second conjugation.
