§ 11. The noun (revision and generalisation)
Textbook: pp. 28–29
GoalRevise the grammatical features of the noun (gender, number, case, kinds) and determine the gender of common-gender and indeclinable nouns.
New words
существительное общего рода (common-gender noun) · существительное общего рода (umumiy jinsli ot)одушевлённое (animate) · одушевлённое (jonli)нарицательное (common noun) · нарицательное (turdosh)несклоняемое (indeclinable) · несклоняемое (turlanmaydigan)
Explanation
The noun names an object and answers «кто? что?». It changes by gender (masculine, feminine, neuter), number and case; we distinguish proper and common, animate and inanimate nouns. In a sentence a noun is most often a subject or an object. Common-gender nouns end in «-а/-я» and mean a man or a woman depending on the sentence: «Он такой неряха», «Она такая неряха». Indeclinable inanimate nouns are usually neuter («метро», «пальто»), indeclinable animal names are masculine («кенгуру»); «кофе» is masculine (the neuter is tolerated in colloquial speech). The gender of abbreviations and geographical names follows the head word: «Миссисипи» is a river, so feminine.
Worked examples
«Мой брат — ужасный соня», «Моя сестра — ужасная соня»: one word, but the adjective agrees with the person’s sex.
«Шампунь» (m.), «рожь» (f.), «тюль» (m.): the gender of nouns ending in a soft sign must be remembered.
Class activity
“Find the gender”. Nouns are on cards; the student names the gender and confirms it with «мой/моя/моё».
Practice
1
Give the gender: «шампунь, рожь, тюль, мозоль».
шампунь – м.; рожь – ж.; тюль – м.; мозоль – ж.
2
Give the gender of the indeclinable nouns: «метро, кофе, кенгуру».
метро – ср.; кофе – м.; кенгуру – м.
3
Make two sentences with «неряха»: one about a man, one about a woman.
Мой младший брат такой неряха! Её подруга – неряха.
4
Why is «Миссисипи» treated as feminine?
An indeclinable geographical name takes the gender of its head word «река».
