Explanation

A conjunction is a function word that joins homogeneous members in a simple sentence and the clauses of a complex sentence. By structure conjunctions are simple («и, что, или») and compound («потому что, в то время как»). Subordinating conjunctions join a subordinate clause to a main clause: time («когда, пока»), cause («потому что, так как»), purpose («чтобы»), condition («если»), concession («хотя»), comparison («как будто»), explanatory («что»). Spelling: «тоже, также, зато, чтобы, оттого, поэтому» are written together; «то же, так же, за то, что бы, от того, по этому» are two words. A comma stands before contrastive conjunctions; before «и» joining homogeneous members there is none.

Worked examples
Class activity

“Conjunction builder”. Two simple sentences are on cards; students choose a conjunction, form a complex sentence and name its type.

Practice
1
Name the type of conjunction: «
4
Why is no comma needed in «Мы пришли и сели»?
