Explanation
The United Nations (UN) was founded in 1945, after the Second World War, to keep the peace. Its main aims are to maintain international peace and security, to develop friendly relations among nations, to help solve economic and social problems and to protect human rights. Representatives of all member states meet in the General Assembly; today the UN has 193 member states. The UN has six official languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish; the working languages of the Secretariat are English and French. Uzbekistan joined the UN in 1992. Abbreviations: UN, WHO (World Health Organization), FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization), WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature), UNICEF, UNESCO.
