Explanation

School rules exist to keep order. Many schools have rules like these: arrive on time, wear a uniform, do not run in the corridor, respect other people’s property, do not leave the grounds without permission. Rules can be given as imperatives or with must: Arrive on time. Pupils must carry their school cards. A ban uses a negative: Don’t bring expensive toys. If a pupil is absent because of illness, a parent or guardian must bring a note. To leave the school grounds a pupil may need written permission. When we compare countries it is useful to find both similarities and differences.

Worked examples
Our rules (own sample): Be in class by 8.00. Switch off your phone during lessons. Don’t litter. Pupils must not leave the building without permission. Bring a note from a parent if you are absent.
Comparison: In both countries pupils must wear uniform, but in some schools in the UK pupils must also follow rules about hair colour, which is not a rule in my school.
Class activity

“Our rules”: a group writes six rules with imperatives and must and compares them with another group’s rules.
