Explanation

In many countries advertising is controlled by law or by rules. In Britain a Code of Advertising Practice says what adverts must be like: they must be honest, fair and decent. If an advert makes a claim, the company must be able to prove it; for example, if an advert says a phone battery lasts a week, tests must show this. If an advert breaks the rules, the authority asks the company to withdraw it. Usually the company agrees; if not, a report is published and the company loses its good name. Opinion: It’s worth checking adverts carefully. It’s not worth telling lies in an advert. (be worth + -ing: it is useful / sensible to do it). Imagined situation: If I wrote an advertising code, I would include rules about honesty. (If + Past Simple, would + infinitive).

Worked examples
Claim: “Our phones never break!” The company must be able to show proof. If the proof is missing, the authority may ask them to withdraw the advert.
It’s not worth exaggerating in an advert, because customers soon find out. If I wrote a code, I would include these rules: be truthful, respect children, never make false promises.
Class activity

“Advert court”: groups review three doubtful adverts (the best, the cheapest ...) and decide whether they pass, giving reasons.
