Explanation
A School Council is a body of pupils’ representatives chosen by the pupils. Pupils are elected, that is, voters vote for them in an election. Word families: elect – election – elector; vote – voter; govern – government – governor; senate – senator; finance – financial. A council member represents pupils and has an area of responsibility. In a campaign speech promises are made with if + present and will + infinitive: If you vote for me, we will open the computer room after lessons. Naming a problem, offering a solution and ending with a slogan makes the speech stronger: Your voice counts – vote for me!
Worked examples
Hi, everyone. I’m Aziz from Class 9B, and I’d like to be your representative. If you vote for me, we will start a homework help club, put a suggestions box in the hall and hold a sports day every term. Your voice counts – vote for Aziz!
The council member is responsible for school events. He represents pupils at the meetings, and his group has ten people. He was elected last month.
Class activity
“The election”: each group picks a candidate who gives a one-minute speech (three promises), and the class votes secretly.
