Explanation
UNESCO is the UN specialized agency for education, science and culture (headquarters in Paris). It was founded in 1945 (its constitution came into force in 1946). Its aim is to contribute to peace through cooperation in education, science and culture. Uzbekistan became a UNESCO member in 1993. The historic centres of Khiva (Itchan Kala), Bukhara, Shakhrisabz and Samarkand are on the World Heritage list. UNICEF (the United Nations Children’s Fund) was created in 1946 and works on children’s health, nutrition, clean water, education and protection; it received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1965. Ordinal numbers: first, second, third, fourth, ... the 21st, the 43rd, the 500th, the 3,000th. Past Simple Passive: was / were + past participle: UNESCO was founded in 1945. Programmes were organised in Uzbekistan.
