Explanation

English is widespread: fewer people speak it as a mother tongue (Chinese has more native speakers), but a very large number learn it as a foreign language. It is used in science, aviation, trade, tourism, diplomacy, information technology and international organizations. Expressing reason and purpose: I am learning English because I want to work in tourism. I study English to understand songs and films. I practise speaking so that I can travel. Future need: I will need English because most training materials are in English. Ways to improve: listen to the radio and podcasts, read news and books, talk with friends, keep a diary, watch films with subtitles. The more you use a language, the faster you learn.

Worked examples
Why am I learning English? Because I want to study abroad and because many websites are in English. I will need it for my job as an engineer. To improve it I read short stories and chat with an online friend once a week.
A: Which job are you dreaming of? B: I’d love to fly planes. A: Does a pilot need English? B: Definitely. Pilots and air traffic controllers all over the world use English so that there is no confusion.
