Explanation

Before you write an essay, make sure you understand the task. A “for and against” essay must give reasons on both sides. The plan is: 1) an opening sentence, 2) a first paragraph with one view and its evidence, 3) a second paragraph with the other view and its evidence, 4) a conclusion in which you weigh the evidence and give your own opinion. Plan your language in advance: the Present Simple for facts (English is used in many countries), may / might / could be for possibilities, will for predictions. When you finish, check that your ideas are logical, nothing is repeated and you have enough evidence. It also helps to let a friend read your work.

Worked examples
Opening: Many people ask whether one language will connect the whole world. Paragraph 1 (for): English is used in science, aviation and trade, so it may stay the main international language. Paragraph 2 (against): Other languages have huge numbers of speakers, so they might become more important. Conclusion: On balance, I think English will remain important, but learners will need other languages too.
Check list: Is every paragraph about one idea? Did I give evidence? Did I use may / might for possibilities and will for predictions? Did I repeat anything? Did a friend understand my essay?
Class activity
