-ing adjectives describe a thing or event: The film is exciting. -ed adjectives describe a person’s feeling: I am excited. Compare: a boring lesson, a bored pupil. Articles: the for something known or unique (the sun, the first woman in space, the east of a country); a / an for something mentioned for the first time or a countable thing (a flag, an emblem); no article for plural nouns in general and for most country and city names (Uzbekistan, Termez); but the United States, the Alps, the Volga. Present Simple Passive: am / is / are + past participle: The country is divided into regions. Laws are discussed in parliament. Describing a flag: on the left, on the right, at the top, at the bottom, in the middle.
Worked examples
The debate was interesting, but the speech was tiring. I was bored by a long list of names, so the teacher showed an exciting video.
The flag of Uzbekistan is described like this: at the top there is a blue stripe, in the middle a white stripe and at the bottom a green stripe. The Legislative Chamber is elected every five years.
Class activity
“Feeling or quality?”: the teacher starts a sentence (The match was ...) and pupils complete it with an -ing or -ed adjective.
