After I’d watched TV ...
Textbook: p. 23
GoalPast Perfect (had + past participle): saying which of two past actions happened first with after / when / before.
New words
documentary · hujjatli filmcartoon · multfilmnature programme · tabiat haqidagi ko‘rsatuvchat show · ko‘ngilochar suhbat dasturi
Explanation
The Past Perfect shows an action that ended before another action in the past. Form: had + past participle (had finished, had seen, had gone). Negative: had not (hadn’t) + past participle; question: Had + subject + past participle? We join two actions with after, when, before or as soon as: After I had watched the documentary, I read a book. The earlier action is in the Past Perfect and the later one in the Past Simple. If the time clause comes first, use a comma; if it comes second, no comma: I read a book after I had watched the documentary. Learn the participles of irregular verbs: go – gone, see – seen, eat – eaten, write – written, do – done.
Worked examples
After my brother had charged his phone, he watched a nature programme. When the cartoon had ended, the children brushed their teeth. As soon as Laylo had written her essay, she sent it to her teacher.
— What did you do last night? — I cooked dinner with my aunt. After we had eaten, I watched a chat show. — Had you finished your homework? — Yes, I had. I had done it before dinner.
