Explanation
In groups choose a short play, give out the roles and rehearse. Preparing a performance: choose a play → give roles → rehearse → prepare props → perform. After the show discuss: What does the play teach us? Whose acting did you like? Which team’s props looked best? Instructions use the imperative and sequence words: First, ... Next, ... Then, ... Finally, ... Example: making a puppet from a paper bag. You need: a paper bag, coloured paper, markers, glue; use scissors only with an adult’s help.
Worked examples
How to make a paper-bag puppet. First, take a paper bag and lay it flat with the folded bottom at the top. Next, draw two eyes and a nose on the folded bottom with markers. Then ask an adult to cut a strip of coloured paper for hair, and glue it on the top. After that, draw a mouth under the fold. Finally, put your hand into the bag and move your fingers to make the puppet speak.
Reflection: The play teaches us to be honest. I liked Madina’s acting because she was funny. The best props were the paper crowns.
Class activity
Performance: groups show a three-minute scene; the audience comments on acting, voice and props.
