Explanation
Amelia Earhart was born on 24 July 1897 in Kansas, USA. She loved sports and active games that were thought “unsuitable” for girls. During World War I she worked as a nurse; at the end of 1920 she took her first flight and decided to learn to fly. On 17 June 1928 she crossed the Atlantic from Newfoundland to Wales as a passenger, the first woman to do so by air. On 20–21 May 1932 she became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic alone. In 1937 she set out to fly round the world with the navigator Fred Noonan; they could not find Howland Island in the Pacific, radio contact ended, and she and Noonan were declared lost. The story uses the Past Simple and the Past Perfect (had learned).
