Legal awareness and legal culture
Legal awareness is the sum of people’s views, knowledge and attitude toward law, statutes and justice. Legal culture is the level of that awareness together with conduct seen in obeying the law: knowing the law, respecting it and following it in daily life. Legal ignorance or denial of law – legal nihilism – harms society. Legal education takes place in the family, school, mahalla and media. The state has also set up a system for raising people’s legal awareness, in which the person, family, mahalla, school, organisations and society cooperate. There are age-appropriate methods: conversations, games, debates and independent reading of official sources. What matters is to know one’s own rights and respect the rights of others.
Discussion: “Ignorance of the law does not remove liability.” Why is this rule needed? Two groups give views.
