Explanation

A review. A participle changes like an adjective (gender, number, case) and answers «какой?»: «читающий, прочитавший, читаемый, прочитанный». A gerund does not change and answers «что делая? что сделав?»: «читая, прочитав». Active participles: «-ущ-/-ющ-/-ащ-/-ящ-» (present), «-вш-/-ш-» (past). Passive participles: «-ем-/-им-/-ом-» (present), «-нн-/-енн-/-т-» (past). Gerunds: «-я/-а» (imperfective), «-в/-вшись» (perfective). A phrase with either is set off by commas after the noun or at the start of the sentence. Gerunds are common in advice and instructions: they show clearly which action happens at the same time and which comes first.

Worked examples
Tips for a cyclist: «Садясь на велосипед, надень шлем. Проверив тормоза, начинай движение. Подъезжая к перекрёстку, сбавь скорость.» (When getting on a bike, put on a helmet. Having checked the brakes, set off. When approaching a crossroads, slow down.)
Analysis: «читающий» — participle; «читая» — gerund; «прочитанный» — participle; «прочитав» — gerund.
