Movement along a surface
Textbook, pp. 60–63
GoalExpress movement along a surface with the preposition «по» and the dative case.
New words
по · bo‘ylabулица · ko‘chaрека · daryoлыжи · chang‘i
Explanation
Movement along a surface or route answers «по чему?» (along what?). We use «по» plus the dative case (дательный падеж): «идёт по улице», «едет по дороге», «плывёт по реке», «ходит по парку», «катается по льду». Dative endings: masculine and neuter -у/-ю («по проспекту», «по полю», «по морю»), feminine -е/-и («по улице», «по дороге», «по площади»). Verbs: «идти», «ехать», «плыть», «лететь», «бежать», «гулять», «путешествовать». Remember: «по» shows the surface of movement, while «в» or «на» shows the destination: «Он идёт по улице в магазин.»
Worked examples
“На лыжах” (On skis). «Зимой мы ездим в горы. Лыжники катятся по снегу, а я осторожно иду по тропинке. Над нами плывут облака, а по небу летят птицы. Вечером мы возвращаемся домой по широкой дороге.» (In winter we go to the mountains. Skiers glide over the snow while I walk carefully along the path. Clouds float above us and birds fly across the sky. In the evening we go home along a wide road.)
More examples: «Автомобиль мчится по дороге.» (The car speeds along the road.) «Лодка плывёт по реке.» (The boat floats on the river.) «Туристы идут по пустыне.» (Tourists walk across the desert.) «Поезд едет по стране.» (The train travels across the country.)
Class activity
“Along the way”. Draw a street, river, sea and sky on the board. A pupil picks a verb card («плыть», «ехать», «лететь») and makes a sentence with the right place: «Корабль плывёт по морю.»

In «Он идёт по улице в магазин», which questions do «по улице» and «в магазин» answer?
«по улице» – по чему? (along what), «в магазин» – куда? (where to).
4
Why do we say «по улице» but «в школу»?
«по» shows the surface (dative), «в» shows the destination (accusative).
