Explanation
A noun (имя существительное) names a thing and answers «кто?» (animate) or «что?» (inanimate). There are three genders: masculine (ends in a consonant: «стол», «брат»), feminine (-а/-я: «книга», «неделя») and neuter (-о/-е: «окно», «море»); for nouns ending in a soft sign check a dictionary: «день» (masc.), «ночь» (fem.). Nouns change by number and case. Declension is the change of a noun by case. 1st declension: masculine and feminine nouns in -а/-я («кошка», «зайка»). 2nd declension: masculine (consonant) and neuter (-о/-е) nouns («тигр», «мясо»). 3rd declension: feminine nouns with a soft sign («рысь», «ночь»). Six cases: nominative «кто? что?» — «кошка»; genitive «кого? чего?» — «кошки»; dative «кому? чему?» — «кошке»; accusative «кого? что?» — «кошку»; instrumental «кем? чем?» — «кошкой»; prepositional «о ком? о чём?» — «о кошке». Some nouns take -у/-ю for «где?»: «в лесу», «в саду», «на мосту», «на полу», «в углу».
Worked examples
“В зоопарке” (At the zoo). «Вчера мы ходили в зоопарк. Тигр лежал на траве, а рысь сидела на дереве. Мы смотрели на тигра и на рысь. Ребята кормили оленя, а потом разговаривали о животных. В лесу и на берегу озера мы видели птиц.» (Yesterday we went to the zoo. The tiger lay on the grass and the lynx sat in a tree. We looked at the tiger and the lynx. The children fed a deer and then talked about the animals. In the forest and on the lake shore we saw birds.)
“Case chain”. The teacher names a noun («кошка»). Pupils say the six cases in turn: «кошка, кошки, кошке, кошку, кошкой, о кошке». A mistake means starting again.
