Expressing advice, a request, a command
Textbook, pp. 39–42
GoalExpress advice, a request or a command with imperative verbs and use polite request formulas.
Commands, requests and advice are expressed by verbs in the imperative mood (повелительное наклонение). In the 2nd person singular the verb usually ends in «-и», «-й» or «-ь»: «пиши», «читай», «брось», «отрежь»; in the plural or polite form add «-те»: «пишите», «читайте», «бросьте». It is built from the present/future stem: «читают» → «читай», «пишут» → «пиши». Some are special: «пей», «бей», «ляг», «встань», «поезжай». For the 3rd person use «пусть» or «пускай»: «Пусть Малика купит атлас.» To suggest doing something together: «Давай купим книгу!» (one person), «Давайте купим!» (several). Polite requests: «Будьте добры!», «Будь добр!», «Если вам не трудно, ...», «Дайте, пожалуйста, книгу.» A ban usually takes an imperfective verb: «Не открывай окно!»
