Explanation
A verb (глагол) names an action. «Что делать?» is imperfective, «что сделать?» perfective. Tenses: past («читал»), present («читаю»), future («прочитаю», «буду читать»). A verb changes by person and number, and in the past by gender and number. 1st conjugation: «-ешь, -ет, -ем, -ете, -ут/-ют» («читаю, читаешь, читают»). 2nd conjugation: «-ишь, -ит, -им, -ите, -ат/-ят» («говорю, говоришь, говорят»); it includes verbs in «-ить» (except «брить» and «стелить») and «гнать, держать, дышать, слышать, видеть, ненавидеть, обидеть, терпеть, вертеть, зависеть, смотреть». Moods: indicative («читает»), imperative («читай»), conditional («читал бы»). Spelling: «что делает? — учится» (-тся, 3rd person); «что делать? — учиться» (-ться, infinitive). Test it by asking «что делает? / что делать?»
Worked examples
“Мой день” (My day). «Утром я встаю, умываюсь и завтракаю. В школе я учусь, а после уроков читаю книги. Вчера я прочитал рассказ о путешествии, а завтра прочитаю новую главу. Если бы у меня было больше времени, я бы читал ещё больше. Хочу учиться хорошо!» (In the morning I get up, wash and have breakfast. I study at school and after lessons I read books. Yesterday I read a story about a journey and tomorrow I will read a new chapter. If I had more time I would read even more. I want to study well!)
Conjugation: «читать» → «я читаю, ты читаешь, он читает, мы читаем, вы читаете, они читают» (1st conj.). «говорить» → «я говорю, ты говоришь, он говорит, мы говорим, вы говорите, они говорят» (2nd conj.).
Class activity
“Find the tense!” The teacher says a sentence: «Вчера мы играли.», «Сейчас я читаю.», «Завтра я напишу.» Pupils raise a hand: right hand – past, both hands – present, left hand – future.
