Describing a person’s appearance
Textbook, pp. 13–17
GoalDescribe a person’s height, face, eyes and hair with adjectives, matching each adjective to its noun in gender and number.
To describe appearance we use adjectives: they name a feature of a noun and answer «какой? какая? какое? какие?». An adjective agrees with its noun in gender, number and case: «круглое лицо» (neuter), «прямой нос» (masculine), «длинная коса» (feminine), «большие глаза» and «длинные волосы» (plural). Remember that «глаза» and «волосы» are normally used in the plural. Model sentence: «У мамы большие карие глаза.» — «у мамы» (who has) is in the genitive, the description is in the nominative. Height: «высокий», «среднего роста», «невысокий»; hair: «светлые», «тёмные», «русые», «рыжие», «седые», «прямые», «кудрявые», «волнистые»; eyes: «карие», «серые», «зелёные», «голубые». General impression: «Он выглядит хорошо» (He looks well).
Worked examples
“Мой друг” (My friend). «Моего друга зовут Тимур. Он высокий и стройный. У него овальное лицо, прямой нос и тёмные волнистые волосы. Глаза у Тимура карие и очень весёлые. Когда он улыбается, все вокруг тоже улыбаются.» (My friend is called Timur. He is tall and slim, with an oval face, a straight nose and dark wavy hair. His eyes are brown and very cheerful. When he smiles, everyone around smiles too.)
“Guess the portrait”. The teacher describes a pupil in «У него … волосы, … глаза» form and the class guesses who it is. Then pairs describe each other.
Practice
1
Choose the correct adjective: «У Малики ... (длинный, длинные) волосы.»
длинные
2
Correct the mistakes: «круглый лицо», «большой глаза».
круглое лицо; большие глаза
3
Describe yourself in 3 sentences using «волосы», «глаза», «рост».
For example: У меня тёмные прямые волосы. У меня карие глаза. Я среднего роста.
4
Why do we say «у мамы» and not «мама» in «У мамы большие глаза»?
The preposition «у» requires the genitive case; «у мамы» means “mother has”.
