Describing a person’s character
Textbook, pp. 18–22
GoalName character traits in Russian, tell antonyms from synonyms and form adjectives from nouns.
Adjectives describe a person’s character. Positive: «добрый», «умный», «весёлый», «вежливый», «щедрый», «честный», «смелый», «скромный», «трудолюбивый». Negative: «злой», «глупый», «грубый», «жадный», «лживый», «трусливый», «хвастливый», «ленивый». Antonyms are words with opposite meanings: «щедрый» – «жадный», «смелый» – «трусливый». Synonyms are words with close meanings: «смелый» – «храбрый», «честный» – «искренний». Many adjectives are formed from nouns: «счастье» → «счастливый», «лень» → «ленивый», «ложь» → «лживый», «правда» → «правдивый», «талант» → «талантливый», «зависть» → «завистливый». We say «Он добрый человек.» or «Она очень отзывчивая.» The adjective agrees with its noun in gender: «добрый человек», «добрая девочка», «доброе сердце».

Он щедрый и скромный: никогда не хвастается своими успехами.» (My friend Alisher always tells the truth. He is an honest, brave boy. When a classmate forgot a notebook, Alisher shared his. He is generous and modest: he never boasts of his successes.)
“Antonym relay”. Two teams run to the board in turn. The teacher says an adjective («щедрый»), the pupil writes its antonym («жадный»). The team with more correct pairs wins.
