Talking about a person’s profession and occupation
Textbook, pp. 9–12
GoalForm profession names with suffixes and talk about a dream job, answering the question «кем?» (as whom?).
Russian profession names are usually made from a verb or a noun with a suffix. Masculine: «учить» → «учитель», «защищать» → «защитник», «лётчик», «наборщик», «журналист», «певец». Feminine forms use «-ница», «-чица», «-щица», «-истка», «-ица»: «учительница», «защитница», «лётчица», «журналистка», «певица». Musicians are named from the instrument plus -ист: «гитара» → «гитарист», «флейта» → «флейтист», «баян» → «баянист». After «быть», «стать», «работать» the profession is in the instrumental case and answers «кем?»: «Я хочу стать врачом.» (masculine, -ом/-ем), «Я буду учительницей.» (feminine, -ой/-ей). The question is «Кем ты хочешь стать?»
Worked examples
“Мечты” (Dreams). «— Кем ты хочешь стать, Рустам? — Я мечтаю стать лётчиком. Мой дядя работает пилотом. А ты, Дилноза? — Я буду журналисткой и буду писать о науке. А моя сестра хочет стать певицей.» (“What do you want to be, Rustam?” “I dream of becoming a pilot. My uncle works as a pilot. And you, Dilnoza?” “I will be a journalist and write about science. My sister wants to be a singer.”)
“Who do you want to be?” Each pupil takes a picture card and says «Я хочу стать …»; a partner asks «Кем ты хочешь стать?». One point for a correct instrumental ending.
