Starting and ending points of movement

Explanation

To say where a movement starts (откуда?) and where it ends (до чего?), we use nouns in the genitive case (родительный падеж) with the prepositions «из», «с», «от», «до». «Из» replaces «в»: «в Ташкенте» → «из Ташкента», «в школе» → «из школы». «С» replaces «на»: «на празднике» → «с праздника», «на уроке» → «с урока». «От» is used for a person or a spot near something: «у друга» → «от друга», «у доски» → «от доски». «До» shows the limit or end point: «до вокзала», «до улицы Мукими». Genitive endings: masculine -а/-я (Ташкента), feminine -ы/-и (Хивы, школы, станции), neuter -а/-я (села, моря). Example: «Новая дорога ведёт от станции метро до парка.»

Worked examples
“Маршрут автобуса” (The bus route). «Автобус номер семь идёт от вокзала до университета. Сначала он едет по проспекту, потом поворачивает к парку. Пассажиры выходят из автобуса у библиотеки. Дети возвращаются с урока домой.» (Bus number seven goes from the station to the university. First it drives along the avenue, then turns toward the park. Passengers get off the bus at the library. Children come home from lessons.)

Class activity

“Route”. A pupil picks two cities on the map; the class asks «Откуда и докуда?» Answer: «От Ташкента до Самарканда.» Then «Откуда он приехал?» — «Из Бухары.»
