Expressing a kind, affectionate attitude (diminutive suffixes)
Textbook, pp. 4–8
GoalForm affectionate words with diminutive suffixes and address close people warmly in Russian.
In Russian, diminutive suffixes added to nouns show small size or the speaker’s affection. Sometimes a consonant changes («книга» → «книжка», «рука» → «ручка») and the stress moves («ветер» → «ветерОк», stress on -ок). These words suit close, friendly talk; in formal speech use the full name and patronymic, e.g. «Анна Сергеевна».
Worked examples
“Бабушкин домик” (Grandma’s little house). «Я еду к бабушке. У неё уютный домик, а в садике растёт мягкая травка и цветут яркие цветочки. Бабушка встречает меня на крылечке: — Внучек мой, заходи! — и ставит на столик чашечку чая.» (I go to my grandmother’s. She has a cosy little house; in the small garden soft grass grows and bright flowers bloom. Grandma meets me on the porch: “Come in, my grandson!” and puts a cup of tea on the little table.)
“Chain of kind words”. The class stands in a circle. The teacher says a plain noun («кот»), the next pupil makes it affectionate («котик»), the next uses it in a short sentence («Котик спит.»). A pupil who makes a mistake sits out.
